'Today' Show Mystery: Savannah Guthrie Reappears In Studio After Unexplained On-Air Exit

A sudden absence from a familiar morning TV chair did not last long

Savannah Guthrie returned to NBC's "Today" show on Thursday, May 7, one day after leaving the Wednesday, May 6, broadcast early without an on-air explanation.

Guthrie, 54, appeared alongside Willie Geist at the anchor desk and seemed upbeat at the start of the show. She discussed the upcoming "Legally Blonde" prequel series, "Elle," and remained on air for the full two-hour broadcast.

She did not address the reason for her sudden departure a day earlier.

The moment had drawn attention on Wednesday after Guthrie left the broadcast about 90 minutes into the show. Craig Melvin later told viewers, "Savannah had to leave a little early. She will be right back here tomorrow, though."

The incident comes during a difficult stretch for the longtime NBC anchor.

Guthrie took an extended leave earlier this year after her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 1. No official suspects have been identified.

Nancy Guthrie had not been seen since late Saturday night, Jan. 31, and footage from a doorbell camera showed a masked man with a gun at her doorstep before she vanished.

Guthrie returned to "Today" the Monday after Easter following the hiatus. She has spoken publicly about trying to hold onto joy and purpose while her family continues to seek answers.
